    First time consideration

So I was wondering and what number of snakes would you all believe that it is a better idea to breed rats then buy them. I know i spend about 80-90 dollars a month in mice for my snakes and it would cost about double that if I fed rats like I wont. So what do you all think?

I'm about to get a new shipment of a couple hundred rats and mice for about 150 dollars or so. To feed 23 snakes.

    And that lasts me months...
I suggest ordering frozen online in bulk. It's much cheaper.

    Re: First time consideration

I buy them at the only pet store in a very large area that you can buy mice and/or rats. The mice are $1.50 a mouse no matter what the size is. Which for me works out since all my mice are huge, and Rats are a bit more expensive up to $3 for jumbo's. I have definitely thought about just bulk buying F/T which would be cheaper just don't have a storage place yet, that's easy enough to fix though. Though if buying F/T is cheaper for a good portion of the time at what point is it that people decide to breed rats or mice for their own purposes.

I have 30 pythons. And I thought I would be saving a lot of money by breeding my own feeders and to tell you the truth I may save a couple bucks but the work that goes into cleaning everyone and sorting and feeding (rats like to eat) im really not saving that much. If I could go back I would probably hold off breeding until my snake collection added up a little more

    Re: First time consideration

    i breed my own ASF's.

they have just recently got started enough that i can actually start feeding them off. and i only have a 1.4 colony going, i was HOPING to have 2 1.4 colonies going, but something unforseen happened and the male and 1 female out of the other group died.

i spent a little over $50 CAD on a 11kg bag of picolab 5053 (rodent block), 3xbags of living world extruded hamster food (not the best) and a 3cubic foot bale of shavings, and so far that has lasted me at least 2 months. so yes, i am definitely saving money BUT

i work at a pet store, and i get all my supplies at cost. but i still think you could save money if you bred on a large enough scale.
