habistat pulse proportional thermostat for heat mat?

I want to get a thermostat for a heat mat iv just bought my bp.I don't just want a basic on/off one and I've bin looking at the habistat pulse proportional thermostat.the spec says its for any non light emitting heater but it doesn't name heat matts.mine is 27 watt n the thermostat doesn't have a minimum wattage.would it be ok to use?

Re: habistat pulse proportional thermostat for heat mat?

    Hi,

Yes it should be fine - I use a habistat proportional (dimming night/ day ) and a habistat pulse proportional ( night/ day ) with the flexwatt heatmats on my big rack.

I also use the on/ off type with ultratherm heatmats on the colubrid rack and with zoomed heat cable in the hatchling rack.

It might also be an idea to check out the new lucky reptile digital thermostats - they are only on/ off types but they are very competitively priced, seem to work well, and the low end one can also handle light timing if you need it to.

    And this is the pro version;

    Hope this helps.

Thanks for that.im only going to be using it with one thermostat,do u think that will matter? I know they're ideal for using with high wattage heat emitting but its only going to be controlling 27 watt?I just don't want to spend the money n then have problems with it once its set up.thanks

Re: habistat pulse proportional thermostat for heat mat?

    Hi,

It depends on how the tank temps work with one heatmat really.

I'm not going to pretend that I don't find proportional thermostats hold the temp slightly better but that is not the same as saying that on/ off thermostats won't perform adequately - because they will.

Check out the prices of habistats on ebay as well as it is a fair bit cheaper than normal shops.

Basically any reliable thermostat will work - just avoid the matstat owing to the low wattage and we should be able to get everything dialied in.

If you do need to add a second heatmat you don't need a second thermostat by the way - you can connect it to a dimmer and then connect that to the thermostat and dial down the heat on the second heatmat using the dimmer switch.

What kind of enclosure were you planning on using?

    Hi,

    Yes it should be fine.

I only mentioned the second heatmat bit in case you found out your house was too cool to be able to use just one.
