A few questions

I was wondering If a heat lamp really is necessary? I hear some people say that you don't really need to and some people say that It's essential. So far I haven't had any problems with Leopold, he eats normally and whatnot. (I have 2 UTH's)

And one more. I see pretty much everyone around here (and at geckoforums) that they have these little rock-type hides:

I have 2 idenetical green plastic plant cups

I'm only a little worried because his head is mostly poking out and sometimes his whole body is exposed. Should I buy a bigger hide? The Petsmarts around my area have nothing like those and they don't have much to choose from, sometimes nothing at all.
(P.S. are tiny half logs ok?)
