    Advice needed with new thermostat please.

    Right i've got a microclimate ministat 100 thermostat and after a couple of hours i've managed to get the mat to the desired temperature. But what im concerned with is that the mat is basically an on and off mat and so the temperature is always going up and down. For instance its on and then gets to 92F then slowly drops down to 82.5F then goes back upto 92F and does this constantly.

    Ideally i'd like one that goes upto 91 then stays that temp. Is that any in the uk that do that?

    I don't know about any in the UK but what you are looking for is a proportional thermostat. Those are pretty pricey. The only ones I know of are the herpstat or Helix.

    Hi,

    The proportional and pulse proportional ones mostly seen in the UK are the habistat ones;

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/HABISTAT-DAY-N...d=p3286.c0.m14

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/HABISTAT-TWIN-...d=p3286.c0.m14

    I have a lot of habistats I use and quite like the adjustable night time drop ( I dislike the magic eye rubbish as I have irregular hours ).

    But microclimate make some too;

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Microclimate-B...d=p3286.c0.m14

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MICROCLIMATE-V...d=p3286.c0.m14

    I was tempted to try these because of the alarm feature on the pulse proportional one.

    You might be able to stabilise the setup you have now by changing where you have the probe though as I have some regular on off thermostats that hold the temps inside the tubs fairly stable.

    At the moment i've got the probe and the digital thermometer probe wedged between the bottom of the rub and the heat mat so that it keeps the mat at the right temperature. But thats temporary until i put her in her new one tomorrow as im waiting for a drill so i can drill a few holes for her new one. Then im planning to drill a hole on the side of the rub, down the bottom on the warm side right next to her hide and then i'll put the probe in the RUB just above where the heat mat is then cover it with some kitchen roll paper along with the temperature probe as i dont trust this thermostat, so that i know the temperature coming through the rub is correct and maybe the temperature wont drop and raise so quickly.

    Hi,

    Actually I would keep the thermostat probe outside the tub the way it is just now but move the thermometer probe to the inside of the tub over the heatmat under the substrate and see what the temps look like from where the snake will actually be.

    The temps inside the tub don't rise and fall as quickly as the temps right next to the probe.

    If you put the thermostat probe inside the rub then the snake can mess with it with possibly serious results. Is she lies on top of it or pee's all over it the thermostat will read that as low temps and turn the heat mat up to compensate - can give you some really nasty heat spikes that.

    Or is she moves it completely off the heatmat it will never get a true reading and could potentially cook her trying.

    It may be faulty because it should keep the temp at 90 and not be more than one degree in either direction!

    Re: Advice needed with new thermostat please.

    Im still having trouble. I've put the thermostat probe directly on the heat mat and it cut out at 91 as i want it too. But when i put the digital thermometer probe on the base of the RUB in her hide the temperature only reached 84 when it cut out so basically the heat aint getting through the base of the RUB quick enough.

    But when i had both the thermostat and probe in her hide it went to 91, so how do i sort this out without puttint the probe in the RUB?

    the thermostat can be set to 98-100 theoretically if the temps in your tub/cage are at the temp you want them to be. It really depends on a lot of factors including location of the cage, ambient temps outside the enclosure, etc.

    I have my thermostat set at 93 to get the 91-92 hot spot i want in my cages in my current location, but before i moved i had to turn my thermostat up to 98 to get the same temps (i also have 2 thermometers attached to the heat tape at various places and a temp gun so im always checking temps).

    This is driving me up the wall now. I've got the thermostat probe and digital thermometer probe on the floor in the rub, above where the heatmat is and covered by abit of newspaper. Now the temperature is still getting to 92 them dropping right down to 81 before going back upto 92 again. Its doing this constantly and i dont know how to sort it out
