UPS smashed a rack
I built a rack last week that I shipped out, and yesterday I received an email that t was destroyed during shipping, along with graphic pictures. It was broken into pieces. Even the Rubbermaid tubs that were in each slot were cracked and missing pieces of plastic. I couldn't believe the pictures. The driver had to have thrown the box off the truck or something for the amount of damage there was. I'm going to take care of it and make sure the customer is happy, but I needed to vent.

Re: UPS smashed a rack
Hi,
Do you have any comeback against UPS at that point? Or are you just plain out the money?

Re: UPS smashed a rack
Is it wrong to add the insurance yourself, even if the customer does not want it?
Have you had a talk with UPS?
Could you post some of the pics up here?

i would surely be raising a big stink about this because it sure sounds like multiple tosses

Re: UPS smashed a rack
Could have been a variety of things. If it was bulk (over 70lbs), it could have fallen off the bulk rollers. People who bring bulk to the semi could have just thrown it down at the base of the semi. Could have been a little person loading the semi and was flipping it til they got it to spot they wanted it. Could have been too much weight in a wall. Load straps weren't properly used. May have been too heavy for the person who put it into the delivery truck so they may have tossed it. Or the driver just kicked it out of the back of the truck because it was too heavy.
I use to work at UPS, so I know pretty much anything that can happen. I got a lot of busted crap coming into the truck I was loading. No one really cares either. Just want to finish their job and go home.

Re: UPS smashed a rack
Dont let them get away with it, start calling customer support and just keep working up supervisors until something is done.

Re: UPS smashed a rack
I will never use UPS again.
My mother has a business shipping medical supplies internationally and has warned me never to use UPS. She told me they are the biggest company and have the "who cares" customer service policy because they still get mega business. They have destroyed many a package on her and we are talking medical equipment worth many $1,000's.
I made the mistake of using them and it cost me a pair of albinos. they lost them for 4 days. I hand delivered that box of live to a UPS station and as I am telling the guy they are live animals (also written in bold letters all over the package) the guy is spinning the box and I had to stop him! Never again.
Jake I am sure you will only get more frustrated trying to contact them as their customer service by far the worst.
Now I only ship Fed Ex or Delta Dash.
I have heard too many UPS nightmares and this is just another.

fedex ground is really bad here just like you shared with ups. really it depends on the area. i also had ups put a snake in a cooler because it said perishable on the box, which it did say right above live harmless reptiles!

Re: UPS smashed a rack
I sent it through ShipYourReptiles, so I emailed them to see what I should do. I didn't pay for extra insurance for this one, for the first time ever, so it was only insured for $100. The buyer opened a claim before he emailed me, but I'm trying to get it switched over to me since any claim will take a long time, so I just want to take care of it, then see what I get back later. I am definitely going to throw a fit with UPS. These damages are not from simple mishandling.
It was a 4-high 28qt melamine rack, held together with 6x 2" construction screws per shelf, and reinforced with metal braces in the back. It was flawless when I dropped it off at UPS. It was 80lbs, and the customer wasn't there to sign for it on the first attempt, so I'm guessing the driver got mad that he had to lug it around, but who knows? It also had big, red FRAGILE stickers all over it, for what it's worth.
Here are some pictures
