Would I have to put him down soon?

I know this is a snake forum, and I probably won't get very many answers, but I just need to know how long until he needs to be put to sleep..

Today when I was picked up after school my dad had told me that my (second oldest) sister had told him earlier that our dog, Max (13 y/o German shepard/Australian shepard mix, turning 14 y/o in January), could not get up off of the floor. So, I'm guessing his legs gave out because when dogs get old their tail bones get bad and the dog would have a hard time walking around, sitting, getting up, etc. I've had this dog ever since I was 1, and I'm only 2 months older than him, so it's really hard for me to lose this dog. How long do you think he'd probably last until he has to get put down?

Honestly, only a good vet could tell you that. There's a lot of things that could have gone wrong. Get him to a vet and get some x-rays done. In the mean time, keep him as comfortable as you can. I know that's not much help, but even a vet couldn't really tell you how long he has over the internet. Good luck with him and my heart goes out to you. I wish you two well.

I agree, that is something a vet has to tell you. But, it sounds like he is suffering, and it may be best for him to let him go. Good luck, I know this is a hard decision, my heart goes out to you.

My oldest dog went thru this a few weeks ago. The meds/supplements he had been on for arthritis were not working the way they used to. We have now put Bettis on Rimadyl twice a day and he is going strong, acting years younger! Expensive, plus you have to keep up on bloodwork but well worth every penny. Really, the best I can say is take the dog to the vet. It may be something they can control or not, no way to tell without a visit.

Vet time. It could be something reversable, or it could his time to go. Either way you should get him to a vet ASAP.

Re: Would I have to put him down soon?

The only ones who really know are you/your family and the vet. If you jump the gun you might always regret it. You need to know for sure if it's his time!

I remember my Thunder a Lab/GSD mix, my mother adopted him for me at a shelter in Menandas NY, he was estimated to be about a year old when we took him home. Fast forward now to when he was 15. In the Spring of 2004 he was having a really hard time getting up and going down the 2 steps to go outside, I brought Thunder into the vet and asked if they thought it was his time, as I didnt want him to suffer at all, he didn't deserve that! the vet told me he still had time left and I'd know myself when he would be ready.

Well in September of 2004, I was sitting on the floor petting him, he looked me in the eyes and told me. He truly did. I never had a moment in my life where I truly felt that I understood what my dog was feeling/saying as this moment.

I made the appointment and rode in the back with him while my aunt drove, most of my family was there.

When I got there, I was having second thoughts, the vet listened to his heart & breathing and agreed it was his time. I guess I knew it already but wished otherwise.

I held him in my arms and thanked him for his unconditional love, for being my best friend and for letting me love him. Mt mother tried getting me to leave the room but I REFUSED!

I believe if you truly love your furbaby you should always be there during their last few minutes. They devote their entire life LOVING you, no matter if you're gone 5 minutes or 5 hours they are ALWAYS just as happy to see you return and greet you with their all. No matter if you're poor, sick they still LOVE you entirely for you!!!

For all that they do for us, we owe them this last thing. So for anyone reading this remember my words, it might be hard for you at this time but you have forever to morn them, in my mind we all truly owe it to them to be there. Dont let your own feelings of hurt & sadness come in the way and abandon them when they need US for once!

September 22nd, 2004 was the hardest day in my life but I live everyday knowing I was there for him when he needed me most! It was the least I could do for all the love he gave me for almost 15 years, this was the day he truly needed me the most. I didn't wait until he couldn't walk anymore, I refused to let him get that way, he was always a very proud boy, and by him walking in he still kept his dignity!

So if you're unsure, ask your vet. You don't want to live with ant regrets!!!

The best of luck to you, my heart bleeds at times like this!! Give Max a hug from me!!!
