    Rat Feces

I have a question for those who breed rats on a big scale. As some may know i am in the process of building a big rat breeding "shed"(26'x26') and im thinking of ventilation. How much would one need to properly ventilate the rooom and how important is extreme ventilation?

I ask because i always heard rodent feces can get you really sick even with limited contact...
I used to do demo on old houses and we had to wear face masks around mouse droppings to stop from getting sick, how true is all this and is there a good chance of getting sick from it?

i dont have any ventilation going outside in my shed. I keep the door open when Im cleaning the racks and I have a fan blowing threw the racks at all times. I also have ac hooked up to the building but so far it hasnt really gotten hot enough for me to use it the only time I cut it on is when im in there cleaning. The poop doesnt really effect me but the urine smell is very strong. I clean the racks once a week on the weekends

We use a small exhaust fan for the room with A/C to keep everything from being too smelly, and the right temp. Too hot and they will slow down on the baby making.

Thanks everybody, so i'm guessing diseases related to rat droppings are not too common as long as you are careful.

It's a good idea when working on large scale rodent rooms to wear proper personal protection equipment and keep the room clean. Rodent pee, droppings, dander and dust build up quickly. I would recommend at least an exhaust fan.

    Re: Rat Feces

You may want to consider getting a carbon scrubber. For the price of that fan, or not a whole lot more, you can move a goodly quantity of air and filter out the smell as well.

I've been looking into them myself and when my operation gets big enough, I will probably go that way.

There are also do-it-yourself guides online.

Do you have a link to information on the carbon scrubber?
    Any help will be appreciated.
