DIY cage for Burmese anyone?
Well I finally made it to my first Reptile Show and picked up a baby Albino Burmese. I have wanted one ever since highschool where I took care of 2 Burms at our highschool all 4 yrs. I had 6 Ball Pythons and a Red Tail Boa which I had sold some 9-10 months ago. I missed my snakes and said if I was getting anymore it would be a Burm or a GTP. I have worked with snakes for about 8 years now and worked with burms for nearly 4 years and I am financially able to afford the Burmese. I got a little boy who is wonderfully tame and dont hiss. His mom sold me on him who was about 13ft and just a gentle giant. You could touch anywhere on face and she wouldn't or flinch and her babys are the same. What I want to do is build a custom cage for when he gets older instead of buy one so I can build it to what I want. I have used the search button and looked at some nice cages but they just show pics. I was wondering if there was a website or a book with plans on building cages. I have 4 years of wood working through school so I can work with wood just fine. Im just not sure on what to use when building the cages and what works good with flex watt and so on. I have seen some people use wood but the chance of it not water proofing good and getting moldy and what not. Melamine seems to be heavy and plastic ya I dont have anything to cut or work with plastic and never have worked with plastic to be honest. Any info and any direction would be great for I have never built a custom enclosure. Thanks

I build my custom enclosures from wood, and line the interior with either formica or vinyl flooring material. You can seal the seams with silicone. It won't exactly hold water, but it does act as a good moisture barrier.

Re: DIY cage for Burmese anyone?
I've got a couple of cages that I'm working on right now. I'll have to put a post up on the build when I'm done. Here's a couple of in progress pics. I still have to add vents and glass, as well as some perches. These are going to be heated by Pro-Products heat panels, and they measure 6x2x2.
I should mention that these are for carpets, I don't mess with burms.

I'm using sliding glass doors. If you haven't seen these, they're similar to sliding glass doors in a display case. There's a track that goes inside of the front frame, and two panes of glass sit in it.
You can do anything really, alot of people make a frame similar to what you see on mine and put hinges on it. Just depends on how elaborate you want to be.

Are the sliders going to be attached to the front edging?

Check out www.reptile-cage-plans.com/
This guy has created the ultimate DIY for EVERY sized enclosure...stackable units (not really app to a burm :-) ), corner units, plexi hinged doors with locking mechanisms...he includes lists for materials needed so there's no guess work. You can build anything you want to your specifications.
I'm going to build a stackable rectangle for my BP...you only pay $27 or so to access all the DIY drafts...you don't need to be an amazing craftman either. It's pretty basic. It also helps you to create your own flexwatt heating elements and install lighting!!
