    Re: related or unrelated

I always go for unrelated pairs for a breeding project. I have a brother/sister pair of spiders, but they are outbred to unrelated pastels...

    Re: related or unrelated

As I'm not to the breeding stage yet I haven't bred anything, but I try to look for unrelated pairs. If I were to buy a related pair I might breed them if their parents weren't related, but then I would NOT breed their babies to anyone related to them.

I've done some research and from what I've found as long as you only breed one or two generations you should be fine, although, I'd like to keep it at one generation. I wouldn't get the related pair if their parents were somehow related to one another-of course to truly know that, you have to have a trust worthy breeder.

From what i have read and learned is that inbreeding with snakes has no adverse affect to their health. Which is how most of the high quality morphs have came about was due to inbreeding.

    Re: related or unrelated

The poll is a little vague.... Do you mean breed unrelated pairs or just purchase unrelated pairs? If I plan on breeding them together, I try to only get unrelated pairs. But there are some projects of mine where I'll buy related pairs and breed them to unrelated snakes. (For example, I just purchased Red Axanthic/Het Red Axanthic siblings, but I'm not going to breed them together.)
Periodic Table Pythons - Quality, captive-bred pythons? It's elementary!

1.0 VPI Axanthic, 1.0 Genetic Stripe, 1.0 Red Axanthic, 1.0 Lesser Platinum, 1.0 50% Het Albino, 0.1 Albino, 0.1 Het VPI Axanthic, 0.1 Het Red Axanthic, 0.1 Het G-Stripe, 0.1 Woma, 0.1 Mojave, 0.1 Normal.

thats why i made it multiple choice because its hard to find pairs of some of the double recessives and other uncommon morphs

    Re: related or unrelated

It would depend on what genes I'm working with, I would want unrelated albinos and pieds, but if I am working with hets or possible hets I think my odds are beter if I breed siblings to eachother and as well as back to mom or dad. That's just me My first post here btw, I have lurked in the halls as a guest for a few years now and love the forum! Tons of smart snake keepers here.

This statement holds true if there are no health or genetic issues related to a particular morph.

The more you line breed a particular morph the higher the chances that a genetic weakness will be expressed that was already existent within the genetic make up of the founding animal.
