need some help with prices
hello my name is Rich and I have been trying to get my own "gig" set up. I am fairly handy with wood so I am making reptile racks and enclosures for people who may be looking. I have got a lot of people interested in them but no one has purchased one yet. unfortunately I have to make them to order so I don't have them just laying around due to my finances. So here is the question. I have a 5 tub 28 qt melamine rack. with heat tape and tubs ready to put snakes in. how much should something like that be sold for roughly. I priced it at 180 idk if that's too high or not. any input would be helpful thanks

You have to calculate your cost of building the rack, that includes materials and labor. Usually in construction/cabinet making any hourly price is 45-55 an hour. Now that is for a small business with employes and overhead. You also have to add for the material, including shipping. Some people will add 5-10% on there materials cost and some won't, that is your choice. Most people will add that total and add an extra amount on for what profit is expected from it, depending on quality and overall function.

Re: need some help with prices
unable to post pics but im just trying to see if my price is comparable with other prices of the same type of racks the quality is as good as anyone elses out there and very similar to others I have seen. people tend not to get them for unknown reasons.... I am thinking my price may be a little high. at 180 for a 5 tub 28 qt. im profiting about 70 dollars or so. spending 105 on the materials for said rack. I also build a 48x24x18 enclosure and sell it for 240 includes 2 lights and heat too with sliding doors are these prices comparable to others or are they over priced

also what the best way to sell the product. im very new to this marketing thing. I have been using face book and craigslist. I want to stay pretty local because of the shipping costs I think that would drive of potential customers even more.

I was once upon a time a full time fabricator/builder and v I'll tell you this much...
Almost anything that is our looks professionally built is priced with the 1/4 rule. Materials should cost one quarter of your gross price. This leaves you room too pay labor and make a profit as a business.
But that's strictly class A build quality.
