Doing things you hate for what you love.

Thought this might make an interesting discussion. Got to thinking about this over the weekend, as I was finishing up my 4th Saturday in a row. I've been working Saturday for the extra overtime, because I'm trying to generate enough money to not go into debt paying for a new project I want to start. Now you have to understand, I hate working weekends, and I mean HATE it. And I have one more to go. Not to mention working 60+ hours in any week will wear you out, never mind doing it for over a month straight. But I know it will be worth it in the end. So let's hear it people, what do/have/will you do to afford or maintain your hobby. I know I can't be the only one who's gone down this road.

Where are we going, and why am I in this handbasket?

I work 60+ hours a week, Monday through Saturday every week and have for a year and a half now. I do it to pay the bills that I have and to get the things I want.

I get paid massive overtime when I travel for work, that being said I am constantly going on on 3-5 week trips (out of the country) away from my family in order to fund/finish my garage in order to house my reptiles.

Re: Doing things you hate for what you love.

I used to work a full time job and a part time job. I was always exhausted and never felt like I had free time. I was working almost 70 hours a week. Once I got some debts paid I quit the part time job and swore never again. Now that I'm looking to expand my snake collection and start some projects I've started looking for another part time job. Because who needs a life when you could have reptiles?

I work 40 h a week minimum at my day job, and right now that's just to pay the bills. Having moved out for the first time, figuring out how to balance everything is a right biyotch. I will likely (not confirmed yet) be starting to take a shift a week at the family owned pet store where I got Nags, in order to fund further BP hobby.

My other big hobby that currently takes up 98% of the precious little disposable income I have goes towards maintaining and expanding a giant book collection XD I have my own personal library and I wouldn't have it any other way

I've got a seperate bank account set up for that purpose. Anything over my regular check automatically goes into that account. That's my fun money account, I'm constantly working all the OT I can or volunteering for special projects that will help beef up that account. Animal sales go back into that account too, but for some reason it never seems to grow as much as I want it to.

Thanks for the replies, I knew I couldn't be alone. I wouldn't mind so much but working so many hours seems to leave me with little or no time with the famliy, let alome time to enjoy the hobbies I work so hard to afford. Got to find that balance point that works for each of us I suppose.

My youngest son sells plasma twice a week for his fun money. I always thought that was something that winos do, but apparently a lot of college kids do it and they're pretty particular about who they accept.

I read the title of this thread and install thought about my hatred of raising rodents

But I work overtime off and on all year, but that time eventually turns into toys for me.
