Going to build mouse rack
We have decided to build a mouse rack to free up some space (all these tanks are taking up too much space) and we were looking at the DIY mouse rack that is stickied.
It calls for Small Van Ness Litter Pans (14" X 10" X 3½") and I was wondering how many mice can live in one of those litter pans. Should the 'tubs' be bigger or is the small litter pan a good size to use for breeding mice. We are trying to keep our groups at least 1.2

Re: Going to build mouse rack
I keep 2 females per tubs and I rotate 2 males through the tubs. Each male rotates through 3 tubs spending 2 weeks in each ones.
I don't recommend more than 2 females if you do when they will have babies it will be overcrowded and they will likely cannibalize their young’s.
I have been using this rack for a while now and I average 13-17 babies per litter.

Re: Going to build mouse rack
I heard that rotating males can possibly lead to the females attacking the males and possibly killing them. Have you ever had issues with this?
Right now I am using glass tanks. One 10g is a 1.2 group. I have a 5g with a 1.1 pairing and those are my only breeding mice for the moment and so far I'm having no luck. The first pairing was the male from the 1.2 group and the female from the 1.1 group and after a month, no babies, so I seperated them and I'm trying new females on the male and a new male on the female to see if either was the problem.

Heard of it but I have never had any issue with that!
You need to experiment and find what work best for you whether it is rotating the males or having a harem.

How would I change the measurements of that rack to fit a larger pan since I will probably experiment with harem breeding first.

Like I did, you figure it out from scratch depending on the pan size you buy (it's not hard) or you wait until I do a DIY for the holdback rack that uses large pans, or you use the Rat rack DIY but replace the 1/2 hardware cloth by 1/3 hardware cloth.
