Re: Rhino-Jack, 100% Kalatoa SD male retic
We've had a change in weather recently. Now instead of his nightly play time and exercise, he has been making his way up to the outside hide on the enclosure and sleeping for several hours. For size reference that is an XL hide on a 2x2 enclosure.
He also has a vet appt next friday to get his nose looked at. Recently it has started to swell. I also found a broken tooth in the side that has some swelling. I haven't found any puss or sign of infection in his mouth but I'd rather not risk it.

Good luck with the vet visit, hope it turns out to be nothing. Can’t believe he’s still that tiny

He weighed in at 516g at the vet visit. The vet said he has an abscess on the top of his nose from a possible bite or other injury. Jack got left at the vets office so the abscess could get cut opened and drained. I can pick him back up first thing in the morning. One of the vet techs said his nose looked like he was impersonating a hog nose.

Best of luck on his recovery. My guess is pushing that caused the abscess. I think it was the same for Phyllis.

Re: Rhino-Jack, 100% Kalatoa SD male retic
He doesn't really push, very rarely maybe once every two weeks he may window wipe or peck (tap) at the enclosure door for 5 minutes. He also doesn't have damage to the front of his nose from normal pushing. Though about a month ago he did miss his f/t and nailed his water bowl pretty hard so that could be the cause of the injury.

Ahhhhh that might do it. He could be pushing late at night too. But I agree that some trauma from nailing his water bowl could be just enough of an injury for an opportunistic bacterial to find a way in to

Re: Rhino-Jack, 100% Kalatoa SD male retic
The doctor decided to use a local anesthesia on jack instead of knocking him out with a general. I was able to pick him back up a few hours after his appointment/suregery instead of leaving him over night. He seems to be doing good and just sleeping in his hide.

He has been in blue for over a week now. I think he's just starting to go clear in this pic. Hopefully in a few days I can get some fresh shed pictures.
The swelling in his nose has gone down a lot recently. The vet said it would take a few weeks after surgery for the antibiotic gel that they packed the wound with to dissolve.
