Do carpets usually hide?

Hi

I've cleared my mite issue and kept him in quarantine with just a water bowl for a week. Now he seems clean and free so i put in a hide, branches, substrate and leaves. But he's been in the hide since i put him in, checked him for mites again but none found.

My cornsnakes are always in their hides, do carpets do the same?

I would say that's normal from my experience. They are nocturnal animals. My carpets will usually hide from the time the sun comes up until it starts to set. Then they will reemerge and bask or explore. Unless they are in shed in which case they don't leave their hides much at all.

During the day, our little carpets do nothing but hide. They're much more active at night. Totally normal. Glad you got your mite issue taken care of! We haven't had a run in with those *knock on wood*.

Getting rid of the mites was a nightmare, hope they don't come back. He doesn't get out at night either, maybe he's getting into shed. Thanks for the help.

He might just need some hide time. I'm sure he wasn't thrilled to have nothing but a water bowl for a week. He'll probably sulk for a little bit, but they always get over it

My little Jungle Carpet is a bit of the opposite - she spends a lot of time out, wrapped around her temperature/humidity gauge (kind of a big, ugly square thing but very effective) or laying on her fake vines. I have a maple branch that I removed the bark and cleaned up in her enclosure (and I added a shelf to the top of it) but she's not a huge fan of it. She's quite entertaining and has adjusted to handling so well - a really great snake.

My Bredli and JCP don't use their hides very often - mostly when they're in shed, sometimes for a nap. Since I strung the fake vines on the jungle gym I don't think my JCP Bruce has gone into his hides at all.

However, Ying the Bredli s a good 6' long now, and Bruce is around 4', so I think they've hit fearless adult stage. I think they did use their hides more when they were smaller.

Sorry, I don't know how old your Carpet is. Maybe you told so in another thread.

My juvie Jungle will not use a hide. However, I got her at one year old, not a hatchling.

My adult Coastals will not use hides either, though provided. All four of my carpets love to live in their water bowls, except the Jungle spends more time in the trees so to speak. I think they like the bowls for security and so that they can see more of a 270 + degree field of view rather than having their view impaired by a hide. They like to soak as well.

He's 1.5 years old according to the pet store i got him from. But they seemed really shady and gave wrong information on care, i still had to get him because he was puppy dog tame.

He's doing great now, finally shed and there were no issues. But he's gone back into the hide after his shed last night. I took him out and he was calm as always and no mites found. I guess he was stressed a lot during the mite treatment and shed. I'll wait a while and let him de-stress.

Also, i've noticed a some white ring (maybe tissue) around his eye. Almost as if the eye isn't filling up the socket, not a stuck shed nor mite. Could this be cause for concern? i've noticed it on pics of other carpet python eyes as well, but not on all.

Our carpets spend all day in their hides, only coming out at night. They're (the 3 of them) between 7 months and a year old. All snakes are different though. Some love hides, while others would rather lounge out in the open. It's a preference thing really.

As for the ring around the eye, could he have retained an eye cap from his recent shed? It could be the edges of the cap you're seeing. And if you didn't notice it until after he shed, I'm guessing that's the most likely culprit. If so, it's an easy fix. You don't want to attempt to remove it yourself and risk damage to the eye. However, a lidded container (with holes for ventilation) filled with soaked spagnum moss and warm water has done the trick for us. As the sides collect condensation, they rub their head on the side of the container and after a bit it slips right off, and presto!
