Look up water dragons, mountain horned dragons, and blue tongue skinks. They're all pretty cool and don't get ridiculously big.

Alright I've given the armadillos some thought, and I think we may have a winner! They are super cool looking, and I know my local reptile store carries them frequently.

If you want a big personality in a small package Ackies are promising. I have been doing similar research to you for a few years now and that's where I landed.

Brandon at Rare Earth has clutches hatching all the time and usually a few juvenile or adult single animals available. I would recommend checking with him if that's where your research leads you. Females and breeding groups can be tricky to care for but a single male doesn't have unreasonable care requirements, has a big personality in a small package, and handle quite well.
Well it's between the Ackies and the armadillos. Ackies were the first lizard I've ever been interested in, but I gave that up after I couldn't find them. I'll have to see if I can afford everything for an ackie and if I have the space for indoors. If not an ackie, then I'm going to get a couple armadillos . Thanks everyone! I'll update with my decision
