Anyone good with computer electronics and computer building??!??!?!?!
Ok..so I am trying to hook up two computer case fans directly to a 350w computer power unit...got the correct wires and everything...problem is when i plug the power unit directly into the outlet and hook the 2 small fans directly up to the power unit nothing turns on...wondering if I need to by-pass some on/off switch or wiring...???
this power unit and 2 fans will NOT become a computer or any part of a computer....they are for another project of mine...
Thanks

Re: Anyone good with computer electronics and computer building??!??!?!?!
You would have more luck using a small powersupply like the ones used to charge laptops and phones etc.
Computer power supplies are designed to be off until you turn them on using a switch on the front of the computer.

Yeah Dr del...I figured that out the hard way....I guess I am hoping for a easy work around like attaching a on/off switch system as if it was connected to the switch that would be on the computer case...or some sort of wiring override system...
ill hit Aaron up with a PM...

You can "hotwire" a computer PSU by using something to short the green wire to any of the black wires on the 24 pin Motherboard connector (the big one) This does the exact same thing as the power switch on a computer. If you want to get fancy you can wire a switch in between those 2 pins.

You can buy PSU jumpers which do what I said in my post above. they will work on any ATX style PSU with a 24 pin connector

Another option is to get something like this:
http://www.performance-pcs.com/catal...ducts_id=31784
This is an external power supply unit that has a single 4 pin Molex connector. You can then use converter cables to 3 pin fan headers, or whatever standard power connection the fans are using. You could even plug this into a fan speed controller unit then the fans into the speed controller.

One thing I just though of. Some older PSU's require a certain amount of power load on them to run. So if this is a 10 year old unit you might want to look into the external PSU I linked to in the post above.

Thank aaron...no worries tho...this is a brand new 350W power unit that I am only running two 40mm fans on....no computer is being built...the fans are being used to circulate air in an experimental QT creation of mine...ive kinda built a negative air pressure box.....lol

The problem with some older units is that if you don't have enough plugged into them they can burn up (not enough resistance) But with a new unit you shouldn't have to worry about that at all.
