    Spermplugs!?
    heya,

    quick question,

I just separated a male and a female and out of curiosity I popped the male AND... I saw a sperm plug,

Does this mean they didn't lock? or could he have made a new one already? he was in with her for 2 and a half days.

    Thx,

    Andrew

They stay locked for a long period of time as far as I know. Like a day straight or something. I would say if you didn't see a lock they probably didn't do the dirty.

Not necessarily. I have had stealth breeders, getting the job done seemingly within half an hour or so, and have heard from other folks whose males are also quick operators.

Seeing a hemipenal cast just means that a hemipene was out. That's it. They're not needed for breeding and they are not a true sperm plug, as seen in other species. They're just an icky booger of sloughed skin, dry/dead semen, and snaky secretions.

Did two sperm plugs come out? They only use one to get the job done so one could've been empty while the other was still locked and loaded. I think there's a video on here somewhere about this exact question.

I was under the impression that ball pythons did not make sperm plugs...

As far as I am aware they are hemipenial casts... stuck shed from the hemipenes.

    ok thanks everyone,

I'll just try them again in a month or so and keep trying haha :D

I know the male knows what he is doing as I have seen multiple good locks of him with another female.

Really?? So evertytime a breeder says "Has sperm plugs and is ready to breed." That's not at all the case?
