I guess I need to use thicker hardware cloth?
These little buggers are unstoppable! Have you ever seen these guys chew through this stuff?

I'm going to be buying a few ASFs this weekend to try to get a colony going.
spitzu, you're scaring the crap out of me!

Just try to get ASF from good stock. You may still have problems, but you'll reduce the likeliness of it.

Excessive chewing like that means their missing something.
If food is low quality, over crowded, and not given a chew block they will chew.

Chew = food. Once they learn it... you can't unlearn it.

They're not that bad... None of my breeders are evil like that so it's not like they're "bad stock". I think that tub was just bored since I apparently forgot to give them chew toys after the last cleaning. Wood blocks are *vital* with raising ASFs. It's nice to see them turn a 2x2 into toothpicks instead of trying to escape.
I was just really amazed that they could chew through metal like that. I've seen them hanging on the top screen and trying to chew on it, but I always thought it was futile and just laughed at them.

Does it matter what kind of wood you give them?
The reason I ask is that periodically we end up with limbs down here--mostly maple or oak. The bigger stuff ends up as firewood, but there are always a bunch of short pieces of 2-3 inch thick limbs sitting on the curb for the taking. Being as I'm a cheapskate, it's very tempting.

I'm not sure, but I personally wouldn't give them anything that I found in the backyard. A 2X2 is only a buck or two. You can cut that down to 1 or 2 inch sections and it should last for a while.
