    Re: Happy Birthday to me.

Second successful feeding. Yummmmm..... She is growing much faster than I expected. She is getting longer what looks like 3 to 4 in of growth in the week I have had her. Still nippy but not bad. She cruses to escape and then turns and bites and runs again. Hope she gets use to being handled. The last time I held her she didn't bite but just ran the entire time. She has yet to draw blood so the bites aren't bad. She is so cute and smoking with those colors.

What a nice birthday present! Have never kept these so I'm not much help there...I'll enjoy seeing yours though for sure.

My understanding is that as babies that their humidity and temp requirements are critical to success. Her warm side is 81-79 and her cool side is 69-72. Humidity has been steady 99% in her tub. I am changing her substrate every 2 weeks is the plan to keep mold and mildew out. She buries herself in the substrate and waits for food. I have seen her use her hot and cool side as well as water bowl. She is a little more active at night than during the day. I do want to make sure she can climb if she desires to.

Glad to hear she’s feeding well for you...shows you are on point with her husbandry. They are such cool snakes...love my Colombian rainbow.

Other than coloration, what is the difference from the BRB and the CRB?

I’m think it is mostly locality and coloration. I haven’t studied the BRB much, but from the little I’ve read husbandry is the same, cooler temps and high humidity for both. That said, I’ve never kept my guy with any higher humidity than my BP’s. Everyone in my collection is on cotton sheets/fabric as a substrate for ease of cleaning, with water bowl and hides. Most of the year humidity is in the 60’s, but this time of year it can drop to the 50’s due to the house heat. Humid hides can help, if they use them...my guy usually doesn’t. He always has a large water bowl, and while he drinks plenty, he has never been one to soak much...even when in shed. He has never been a burrower either, even when I used aspen, and then later cypress, as a substrate. It’s like he missed a couple of chapters on how CRB are supposed to behave.

I’ve read they can live 20 years or slightly longer. According to the original owner that I got Hudson from, he was born in 1988, making him 30 this year. Even if that wasn’t accurate information from the owner (no reason to believe it wasn’t correct), I personally have had him since 1996/1997. He was definitely an adult when I got him, though in very poor condition. So just going by how long I’ve had him, he’s no less than 21 with great body mass and muscle tone, though I really do believe he is 30 based on his size when I got him. My female corn, Yin (who just passed), was 16 and no longer had the muscle tone like when she was younger. The same goes for my male corn, Yang (also 16), and my Bci, Duncan (26). As they have gotten older, I’ve noticed they aren’t as strong and don’t tend to hold on to me like they did when they were younger. I am definitely supporting them while they cruise along in my hands or lap. They don’t even grab on so that they don’t slip. Much like we lose muscle tone as we age.

Whether snake or human, we need to keep active...working out = muscle tone The problem is that our captive snakes aren't active enough, just like many of us.

Re: Happy Birthday to me. BRB update.

So she is doing well. I am guessing she by growth rate. Got her at 3 weeks old. Keeping her in a tub still. 80 hot spot, 70 cool spot, average humidity is 80-99%. Eating a fuzzy rat weekly. She has gone from a 22 gram tiny thing to a 68 gram in just a few weeks. She bit me the first day I had her. No biting after that. I hold her about 2 to 3 times a week for 5 to 10 minuets at a time. She is active when being held. I move slow and she explores my arms. Loving her. Hope that as she ages some to get her in a display enclosure that she will enjoy things to climb on and substrate to burrow in. If she keeps being a clam animal will be a nice addition to my shows. Her name is Luna.
