Newest hen laying
I had to share a picture of my newest hen's egg. She's a blue copper Maran, and lays nice dark brown eggs. Pictured here with the light brown and tinted eggs from my Wyandottes and Sussex.

Congrats!!!!!!
I remember what it was like when our girls started laying, now we get 3 to 5 eggs a day and don't really know what to do with all of them

Re: Newest hen laying
I gathered up quite a few recipes for eggs because we were getting so many eggs. I currently have 15 standard hens (plus 4 bantams), so with 3-4 eggs each per week at peak production, that's a lot of eggs! Lol
our friends, family, and neighbors love us.
I want to get a couple more Marans. I love those dark chocolate eggs! 2 of my hens are "olive Eggers", cross between true Americana Ands Maran, and actually do produce olive colored eggs. Then the Wyandottes and Sussex lay the light brown and tinted eggs. Fun having some variety.

Re: Newest hen laying
I had looked into marans, with their beautiful dark eggs. We gave a lot of eggs away. My daughter also loves and snacked on a ton of hard boiled eggs.

Pfft, I wish one of you lived closer, because I'd be more then happy to get eggs from you. Those things add up after awhile, especially when you eat a lot of eggs.

Nice, and those eggs are monsters! We've got 9 hens and almost have more eggs than we can eat - almost. I eat hard boiled eggs to help!

Re: Newest hen laying
And there's especially nothing like a homegrown fresh egg! With all the take scraps, plants, bugs, and everything else they eat, their yolks are so beautiful. Any other egg looks anemic now.
The Marans ate big too, I was surprised at the size difference. Meant the roosters that hatched (the Marans and 3 bantams were hatched by my silky bantams from fertilized eggs a friend gave me) had good use, if you know what I mean. I would have really loved keeping a blue rooster, but I've already got one rooster I'm not supposed to have (in city limits, but neighbors don't care fortunately), and he didn't crow as much as those Maran cockerels. I actually helped one hatch when he got stuck and the membranes started drying in the summer heat.
