Air holes in rack???

all my racks are lidless with gaps. they all have many air holes in them. when your snake poops or even pees, the ordor in the room is bad. imagine how bad it is in the small tub until you clean it. even with a clean enclosure, fresh air for your snake is important. there's other ways for contolling humidity. just my opinion don

I would also say hole too just tops do not ventilate well at all. The general formula is 7 times the side height to get clean non turbulent air. If the tub is 5 inches hight the clean air starts at 35 inches along the bottom away from the sides.

I use the rule if the water bowl is removed and the substrate is dry the rh should be equal of the room in less than one hour. Just top hole almost always fail the one air change per hour. (10 times less than a class room is allowed)

Cause your tubs might be alright without the holes, and once you drill the holes, there's no turning back lol

I think ill try it without holes... The snake seems to be fine and I can clean the cage if they make a mess I check them like 3 times a day haha! Also without holes it seems to keep the ambient temperature up a little bit which I like

Ok let me try to explain. Turbulent air does not exchange well. Picture an open top freezer in a grocery store. Heat rises so the cold stays in, that holds until you start moving air in the store, ventilation people walking ect. If open tops vented well, stir up the cold air and thaw the contents. This however does not happen. The sides create turbulence that prevents air from circulating. This is the same principal that keeps leaves and bits of junk in the back of a pick up truck parked outside in a windy day. The sides create turbulence that prevents severely limits air exchange. The general rule of thumb is measure the side height and multiply by seven times and you have the distance before 'clear' (non turbulent air) to reach the 'floor'. This basically means a 5 inch tall enclosure means that in a 36 inch square enclosure you have only a single inch in the exact middle that is venting well from the top to bottom.

Ya I guess that makes sense. But a few people are saying ill be fine without holes, my question to those people is how will I know if I need to add holes will my snake act differently or something? He seems fine and his been son the tub for about a week with now holes in it.

It will get sick if you don't have enough air flow. RI is the most likely issue. No one really knows how little is too little but as VPI (Barkers) say you can't have too much. Err on the side of more not less.
