Why is she being a "bad mommy"?

I got "Zukhora" at the April Hamburg show. She has just laid another clutch, but were having the same dilemma as last time. Instead of laying them in a neat pile, and then coiling around them, she just randomly "plops" them in her tub in scattered places, and then leaves em'. I caught her laying this time, so I could at least retrieve the eggs whenever she laid them. The temps are fine, she's ate great for me, and she's been otherwise acting normal. What would cause a female to do this? I don't understand....

Not having an acceptable place to lay.

    Infertile eggs.

    Inexperience.

    Stress.

    Stupidity.
I may not be very smart, but what if I am?

im really not sure... in my opinion, as long as you can retrieve the eggs, than its not that big a deal

    good luck with the clutches!

And yes, the first clutch was 90% slugs.....hmmm...
I'm not sure about inexperience, because i got her as an adult at a show this spring and have no idea of her history....he had actually gotten her from a trade. As far as stress, I wouldn't say she is. She's in an adult ball sized tub(42qt),with two hides, soft sorbent bedding, and an egg box, she wouldn't use. and she's around the same size (tad bigger) as the male I had her with, "Zephyr" who is seven years old. So far in thios clutch of 4 eggs so far, one has a window, 1 looks to maybe be infertile, and the other two look good. She looks to lay about 2-3 more. I don't have a flashlight (with working batteries)to candle them, so I'm hoping for the best!!

    Stupidity on her part.

My guess is that she's laying slugs. She would know this and not take the same care with them that she would with fertile eggs.

Re: Why is she being a "bad mommy"?

Thanks Wes....that makes the most sense. Even if half of the clutch were good, how would she know the bad eggs from the good? If she knows a lot are slugs, then she probably just is giving up on the whole clutch.I guess she's really not being stupid, just "uncaring" or "unmotherly".

    Or incredibly efficient.

Why waste energy on eggs that won't hatch?

Systems that have worked for millions of years generally have some good reasons for working for millions of years.

Re: Why is she being a "bad mommy"?

It's a good thing I was there to get the 3 good ones! She laid one tiniest little egg that was the size of a jelly belly jelly bean.....I'm sure it wont hatch. But, I'm hoping for the three eggs that are still white. She had a total of 6.
