Has anyone bred red wigglers before?

I started a culture today and wondered if there were any major things not to do. I have been reading alot on the internet but I'm not really sure what to feed them. Any advice would be awesome. Thanks Jeff!

Re: Has anyone bred red wigglers before?

I'm guessing that you're talking worms. I have my own little breeding colony that I started since I go fishing a lot. Get a bag of soil that has no fertilizer in it (hard to find anymore), fill a plastic container half to 3/4s full (I used a 10 gal sterilite box), make sure you have a lid. If the box doesn't have holes in the handles, you'll need to drill some near the top for air flow.

You can feed them most anything that's plant based. I feed mine kitchen scraps like potato peels, apple cores, etc (no meat, dairy and limit who much citrus you put in). You don't want to feed too much. It also won't hurt to put in a cup of water every other week to keep things moist. From what I read, worms lay about three or four eggs each week, so you'll get a nice sized colony pretty soon.

So do I put the kitchen scraps on top of the soil or mixed into it?
