Sugar Gliders

My daughter Beth is very interested in having a sugar glider as a pet. She's started doing her research on these fascinating little creatures.

Do any of you know a reputable breeder in the lower Michigan area or within a reasonable driving distance of Toledo, Ohio? Also any of you that have experience with sugar gliders, is there a particularily good site online for caresheets, caging requirements, etc.

It has everything from the food "mix" to bonding, to crabbing, and everything in between.



Since the are Illegal here in CA. I will say that I "dont" have one.

But if I were to have one....this is the cage that we use. LOL

They can be put in "Open Air" screen cages, but I didnt really like her in that.


Their food, is pretty interesting. We make a blender full, and freeze them in 1 Tablespoon ice cubes.

They go and just munch on the frozen mix.


I will add that they "bond" to their human counterpart. So they should be kept with, or on their bonded person a lot of the time.

Oh thanks so much for the link and info, Pat. Beth is like me in that she wants to do her work beforehand and get as much solid information as she can. She got to handle a young sugar glider at the Taylor show this weekend and was immediately in love with the little guy. It's a high need type of pet though so I want to make sure she, and by extenson me, are ready for needs of one of these cuties.

Jo, I was looking into getting a couple gliders about a year ago. Decided I wouldn't have enough time to dedicate to them, but I did find this place near Cleveland, Ohio when I was researching:

Sugar gliders are great and I really wish I could get one again. Maybe later in life when I have time.

I used the BML diet and my guys loved it. Very simple and rather inexpensive to make. Other than the vitamin powder and calcium powder, the ingredients cost us around $15 a month to make the BML mix. Not bad at all. Then they can pretty much eat just about any fruit or veggie you are eating as long as its not cooked. Apples, carrots, peas, cantalope, melon, kiwi, mango (mine loved mango!), squash, cucumber, etc.

Grapes and any citrus fruits are a no no. Citrus can be given every now and then in very small amounts. Corn is also one that should be given sparingly, though the guy we got our two from fed them a veggie mix he got frozen from the store of corn, carrots, and peas. The gliders did well on it.

Ours were in a big flight cage. You can find one online for about $50. Get lots and lots of bonding pouches. Gliders (at least mine) have a tendency to take their food into the pouches with them and leave them in there for later. You will be doing a lot of washing and a lot of cleaning in general. Our little guys thought it was funny to fling their food all over the wall.

Gliders also have a naturally musky odor. We got used to it pretty fast and as long as you keep them clean, smell won't be too much of an issue. But people coming into your home that don't visit everyday will definitely notice the smell.
