Aspen is a good substrate, some use printed or unprinted newspaper.

I have the t-rex sani chips in my tank. I think it is basically square cut aspen. However, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. First off, it sticks to anything wet, sticks to the sides of the tank, sticks to the snake, gets in the water bowl, its just a pain. And secondly I find that it doesn't allow the transfer of heat from the bottom of the tank to the top of the substrate.
