PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh police say a high school student is facing charges for using a biology class snake as a jump rope.

Police say the incident happened Monday at Taylor Allderdice High School, according to KDKA-TV.

Police aren't identifying the 17-year-old suspect because he's being charged in juvenile court. The boy will be charged with theft and cruelty to animals.

The animal survived the ordeal and was being examined by a veterinarian.

Pittsburgh Public School officials on Tuesday were not immediately able to say what kind of snake it was.

I just wanted to add that it doesn't condone what he did... And I'm sad to see that the snake wasn't taken to a vet for an exam despite those at the school thinking it's okay. But facts are good to have.

The snake was an albino corn according to this news article.

As was pointed out on another forum where this version of the article was posted... we often go after the news/media for sensationalizing things that detract from the herp hobby. Maybe we need to be critical of it all the time and not just selectively?

okay.. so he didn't use it as a jump rope.. he still needs to be flogged and used as a speed bump. I also think that part of his punishment should be community service at a local shelter and or zoo. Make him work, supervised of course, around animals, in particular ones that have the potential of using him as a toy. perhaps then he will learn respect for animals.
