Hey everyone, I just picked up 1000 superworms for my leos and want to know what it takes to breed them, if any has done this, or knows how to or can refer me to a good guide it would be greatly appreciated.

I used to keep mine in the laundry room... the higher temps help them mature faster.

Once you get an established colony they are fantastic, but it can take awhile to get them to that stage.

Google is your friend, there are tons of cricket breeding sites. Breeding crickets is all shades of disgusting though, they escape, they stink, they infest, so be prepared to take appropriate precautions.

Re: I want to start breeding superworms (help)

I didnt get as nearly many super worms as you, I think 200, and out of maybe 60 left over worms, 6 went to pupae, 3 came out as beetles. 2 males, 1 female. They did the nasty a lot, but my colony never got off the ground, no little worms or anything. My last beetle just died a couple of weeks ago, and I started this project like last summer.

    Apparently I can't raise insects. :/

Re: I want to start breeding superworms (help)

I had no issues getting the beetles to lay eggs, which hatched, and the teeny worms would grow to "tiny worm" stage, but no further. I've been told I needed more heat.
I bought my wheat bran at the feed store, for about $6 or so, I got 40+ lbs. Much better than the health food stores!
I hate crickets!! I accidentally had crickets breeding in a tank with dirt substrate once though. So if I can accidentally have baby crickets everywhere, it can't be that hard. I'm sure if I had fed them, they would have grown up. I just hate them, the adults chirp, and they all stink, and escape, and are just nasty.
I've been told by a lot of folks that roachs are a better bet, but most roachs can't be shipping into Florida, so I won't know!

Re: I want to start breeding superworms (help)

yea after looking at a bunch of "how to" breeding websites, i have decided not to try anything right now, I don't have the time to breed superworms, and the overwhelming smell that comes from 100 crickets is enough to turn me off of breeding potentially hundreds of crickets.

    thanks for the help though.

It is very easy to breed ordinary mealworms. You might want to consider doing that instead.
