    Question Sterlite Size?

I am probably going to pick up a Red Tail here in the next month...wanting a juvie cause I love to watch the babies grow!
That being said, if I get a young Red Tail what's the max size/min size he should be in at first?
Walmart carries this 41 qt. "Under-bed" Box (pictured below)
I am sure many of you are familiar with this size box, but it is
    34 3/4"L X 16 1/2"W X 6"H....
Will this be too big for him as a juvie???
If so can anyone recommend a nice sized one for me for a baby?

I apologize for all these Q's, that may seem pretty obvious to many, just wanting to do my research
I promise to reward you all with some amazing pics when I bring my future baby boa home!

    Re: Sterlite Size?

As a rule of thumb....a boa really cant be in too big of an enclosure. In the bp world, we tend to say, if they fit in a 32qt comfortably, why bump them up to a 41qt, etc. In boas, I find that if you can provide the extra space, go for it. Keep in mind, everything is best in moderation. You dont want a baby boa in a huge tub. I say this for 2 reasons....first, they will be more likely to have feeding problems etc, although I doubt that will happen provided you get it from a good breeder. Second, it is going to be a bigger pain for you to clean, sterilize, etc.

As for a good starter size- our boas were about 5 months when we got them, and will be a year at the end of April. They have been in 15qt tubs since we got them, and will probably be bumped up around their birthdays.

If you are getting anything older than 3 months or so, I think you would be alright with getting anywhere from a 28-40ish qt without any size issues, and it gives you some play-time before you have to think about upgrading. The main reason we went small was to fit it all on to our "snake cart" (see my gallery if you want to see what I mean, where the two smaller tubs are below, we rotated them lengthwise and added similar tubs next to them, for a total of 5 on the whole cart). Once we bump them up, we are going to have to find a new place to keep their tubs.

    Re: Sterlite Size?

Try that same brand and series but the 28 qt. That tub should last you a good while, without being to overly huge

I thought that the 41qt looked a little big for a baby...
So I'll start with the 28qt...then move to the 41qt....then after that I imagine I'll look into a custom enclosure.
    Thanks a million!

Since you seem to still be awake, I'll throw another one on here for ya...what kind of hide do you use for baby/juvies? Do they like the logs, or is there a cheaper/homemade hide they seem to prefer?

PS. I imagine once I get him, you will hear alot from me...lol

    Re: Sterlite Size?

    They are from www.jimisnakes.com

By looks, they are just normal, but they are both Het Kahl Albino.

His prices are very fair, just gotta deal with shipping. If you want a top notch boa, keep him up there on your potential breeder list. The pair was just under 300 shipped.

They were a little nice looking when they were younger, but still beautiful in my book. The boy is very clean, but has been getting a little darker and specklier, but his tail color is actually improving. The girls color has always been solid, and her body has a lot of pinkish in it. Check out my iherp for a couple more photos, and let me know if you want some more.

    Re: Sterlite Size?

I have talked to Jimi, and if I can't find a local breeder or a nice one at the show here on March 1, I am going to get back in touch with him...he has some awesome boas and great prices...but at this time I kinda wanna cut out the shipping cost and TRY to grab one up locally...

    Re: Sterlite Size?

Just a word of advice, don't cut yourself short by buying a lesser quality animal just because you didnt want to fork out 50 bucks for shipping. When I wanted a pair of boas I looked around locally and didnt find anything even close to Jimi's league, and Jimi's prices were often better (save shipping). If you have some good breeders around you, more power to buying locally, but dont convince yourself that it is "good enough". Red tails, and just about any color morph reptile are not where you want to skimp on, because you really do get what you pay for.

    Re: Sterlite Size?

I am definately not going to screw myself just to not pay shipping
There is a guy that I bought my male ball from (when I had him) and he is really good, and occasionally has boas there, that's kinda what I'm waiting for...
And you're right, $50 is not bad for shipping, Jimi shot me some awesome prices for some and the prices were for the animal shipped...so just waiting to see what that guy has at the Indy show...
    But thanks for lookin' out
And thanks for all your help!
