    Re: mites?

Snake mites are host specific. They do not maigically appear, they are transferred from one snake to another.
Just because no mites are visible on a snake does not mean they are not there.
The only way to get snake mites from aspen shavings is for the aspen to come in contact with snake mites. They can not live a long time without a host though, so they need a snake to feed off of and in turn breed.
That isn't to say that the aspen could not be infested with wood mites, but they pose zero threat to your animals. They are also host specific.

    Re: mites?

Reptile mites usually come from another snake, but they can also transfer on clothes. If you were visiting a pet store, holding someone else snake, etc. you may have inadvertently transferred them to your collection.

The main question is...are you working on treating them with products like Prevent-A-Mite, Fipronil, or Permectrin?

    Re: mites?

If you get it from a pet store it will come with mites. They have a fast turn around and the snakes all sit in the same substrate.
Some people try and kill off the mites before they sell the snakes. This way you get a snake that has no mites but is most likely covered in eggs.
And soon enough the mites just apear.
Mites are easy to get rid of if you use "prevent a mite'
I've gotten snakes in the past that came covered in mites and i eradicated them and never had a reinfestation.

    Re: mites?

Just to make sure I understand - the common dustmites that are supposedly in all our homes is not something that would attach to our snakes??? Is this correct.

Also, do the mites that may get on a lizard or gecko - transfer to a snake??

I currently treat my whole enclosure with PAM once a month as a preventative - haven't ever had mites and dont want them.

I assume that none of these mites would host on a human - is this correct.

    Thanks everyone.

dustmites are not the same there is also woodmites which are also not the same.

yes mites can transfer from any herp to any herp!

pam is great to use just watch as babies and some lizards might react to it.also dont spray it where your cat or dog could get to it.

they will not host on a human but they can get on you at a show or petstore whatever and you can bring them home with you.
