    Bought a new goat!

I bought a new goat today~ a little "genemaster" doe (3/4 boar, 1/4 kiko)~ I'm very excited about her! It's raining like crazy now so pics weren't really a priority but I'll get pics of her and show them off soon! Already named her~ "Betty" She is to keep our current Boar Doe "Butt Head" (if your looking for her~ look behind you......thats why she's named "Butt Head"~ thats where her head ALWAYS is!) Anyway~ Betty is to keep Butt Head company when I butcher the two evil mini's that live with Butt Head currently. I also bought Betty's sister~ but she won't come home for another couple week!

Very exciting time on the Homestead right now. I butchered our first goat this week and we had part of him for dinner last night~ he was delicious! I'm planning on butchering the two mini does soon~ maybe Friday if I can borrow a revolver from the neighbor on Friday. Butt Head has come into her first real season and is ready to be bred so I'll be taking her to the neighbors buck for some "service" ~ maybe on Friday when I try to borrow his revolver~ I just bought Betty ($65 for a goat thats going to eat weeds and provide me DINNER several times when I breed her!) AND there is an Auction this Friday and Saturday........Scott wants to go......so you KNOW I'll be coming home with something new!

    I'm LOVING be a homesteader!

I demand pictures of said new goat, Betty.

I will probably have goats one day but they will be strictly pets. Maybe a nubian or a pygmy.
    Under Construction.....

    Re: Bought a new goat!

Nope~ no lambs. I'm not too keen on the whole wool thing~ especially as the pastures for the goats are mostly wooded and overgrown with brambles. Will be getting pigs soon though~ built the pig pen~ waiting on the breeder to wean the piglets!

    Oh~ and YUMMMMM???
Why would that sound horrible to me? This is a working homestead and I intend for the animals to begin paying for themselves within the year. I just lectured the Turkeys and ducks this morning that LAZY BIRDS that don't lay me eggs can always be added to the menu next week! (The turkeys and ducks are not laying right now because of the season~ but I keep hoping a threat will get back to work faster!........or~ maybe I just spend too much time by myself with my animals!)

    Re: Bought a new goat!

Are you milking your goats? Or are you mainly keeping them as meat producers?

    Re: Bought a new goat!

Right now just as meat~ but there is a farm about an hour from me that holds a class where they teach you how to milk a goat, then how to make goat cheese, ice cream and stuff out of it. Next class is Feb 7 and I'm planning to sign up for it!

    Wow...you have been busy!

What made you decide to take up homesteading? The economy?
