Re: Can you house together and breed 3 female rabbits and one male?

I wouldnt, i would keep the females seprate from the male.
its easier on the female because she can raise her litter in peace, and have time to recoup and also be able to support her litter in the nest box with all the nutrients she can without having to split between litters.
not to mention the male isnt constantly driving them mad... and wasting energy (if you get what i mean).

its also easier to know when a female is due, and a nest box should be put in the cage if you know exactly when she was bred.

i have one male and 3 breedable females.
the girls all have their own cage, and are brought into the males cage when i want to breed them.

i mean, you could do it.
but its better for the rabbit, and they live longer...

plus, rabbits are naturally solitary animals.
they really dont like company - regardless of what pet stores say...

I agreed with your other post, but not this. Rabbits aren't solitary creatures. They really find comfort in having others around, be it humans or rabbits, maybe even guinea pigs. But they do need company.

I don't agree with a lot of what you do and say, but it's generally not my place to say anything about it. In this case, I'm not sure where you got this information from since most informative rabbit sites will say they need company - it's not just pet stores.

so you guys are saying that 3 females can be housed together and raise their litters together once they've been impregnated?

    wow, ok.
    either way.
let me clarify. fixed rabbits generally can get along and be housed together. but rabbits which are being bred, will fight. I tried keeping 3 girls together. one of which is not fertile, yet is/was the dominant female. By fighting with the other fertile females which were pregnant, she caused them to lose litters.

NOW that they have been separated. I will hopefully be expecting a litter in a couple weeks.

it happens, now i keep my females in separate cages, and they get to frolic together when im cleaning cages about once a week... i take them out often and they are pets.

as for that, i believe its less stress on the female if she has her own cage and nest box... what do you plan to breed for? pet? meat? snake food?
    and what breed...

if you have questions feel free to PM me.

I'm breeding for snakefood, and rabbit stew for myself and the breeders will be my pets ! I just got my first litter the other day I think it's 8. And I was also expecting a litter from my other pair but it seems that I have a barren so I'll be able to determine next month which one I'll cook first.
Thanks for your help I was concerned that they would fight as you said, So I'll have to build a few more hutches.
Also do you know if they make some sort of heated water bowls to keep them from freezing because their water freezes all the time?

If you go to your local feed store, you can get wire cages - OH SO MUCH EASIER TO CLEAN!

here is something i saw at my local feed shop

yeah, i just got two young mini rex girls cause i think my mixes are not fertile

im contemplating getting New Zealand's from a friend of mine to breed and sell to local big snake owners... but im not sure yet it really depends on the demand and if i would be able to produce rabbits and atleast cover what i spend...

Re: Can you house together and breed 3 female rabbits and one male?

Now, here is a page i found where the guy would cycle in his males, which IMHO is better... and being that he houses them in large cages, the males have less of a chance of being attacked by a female protecting her territory...
but the only issue is like he says on the site - its harder to have some tame babies to sell as pets...

if i had the room and money to build a big nice run and small shed deal like that... i would... seems nice, and would be cool to let my rabbits out to run once in a while...
i wouldnt like the idea of chasing them around tho... lol

Yes, this type of managed colony method is exactly what I had in mind.
I'm planing on building a larger cage and I'll try doing something like that, I do not have that much room though.
That's amazing what this guy is saying, 40 rabbits from 4 does per month, I can't wait! There will be plenty of food for the burm and the boa and for me!
