    Hog feed...requesting info

I've started this thread on another forum as well if it looks familiar to you, but I thought that some of you on here may have good insite as well...

As my colonies of rats and mice continue to grow, I have began looking for a cheaper food that still does the job. I've found bits and pieces of random info about using hog feed, but have never found a thread dedicated to it. Who uses it, and what seems to be the results you are having? Also, if you have any good info. on why you should or shouldn't use it, please post it for discussion. I just can't bring myself to believe that breeders such as the ".coms" are spending big $ on lab blocks when they sell their rodents for so cheap.

The hog feed has a real low fat only 3 percent. If you have a tractor supply near you buy some dog food that is called doggie bags, last time I went i got it on sale for only $10 its normally 11 or 12. It is perfect and has 6 percent fat which is what mazuri 6f has.

You'd be surprised what buying in bulk will do for high quality rat feeds, and just how inexpensive they are for the large breeders.

    Re: Hog feed...requesting info

I went to the two local feed stores today. Neither of them could get the Kent feed. One could get 6F for 22.75/50lbs and 9F for 25.75/50lbs.. According to the Kent website there is a dealer that is about 30 min. away. I'll give them a try asap. Even if it's a no go, the 6F is better/cheaper than the Sand Valley feed I'm using for 22.00/40lbs. Thanks for the replies, I wasn't trying to cheap out, just find out what the hog feed was lacking nutritionally.

That Sand Valley your using is Harlan Teklad repackaged for public sale. Harlan is considered the best complete nutritional lab block available. After that (but harder for me to find) is Ziegler, and also Mazuri products IMO.
