    Question Dog collars on cats?

Has anyone used a small dog collar on their cats? Both of my boys are strictly indoor cats, and I'm kinda leaning towards trying a little dog collar for them, instead of the cat collars.

Both boys are used to collars already, but I can't stand the ones I have for them. They are a pain in the butt...there are no actual holes in them. You have to just kinda push the pin through the collar where you want it. Which would be great, but that also means that if it isn't pretty tight, it works itself loose and falls off. So anytime the boys scratch, the blasted things falls off.

I know the cat ones have the safety snap for a reason, but half of the time I can't even open them by pulling on them. I'd hate to think of what the cat would have to do to get out of it. The collar I have now has an elastic band on part of it, so it will stretch out and he can slip out if need be. Which is why I got it, but being strictly indoor cats (they only go outside once in a blue moon with a harness and leash on) do you think it would be a bad idea to try one of the dog collars, and just keep it a bit looser than I would a cat collar?

I found a really nice cat collar at Petsmart for my new boy. They have some nice collars, for both dogs and cats. The rolled leather ones look comfy.

Hm...looking at Petsmart.com, it doesn't even look like all of the cat collars have the safety releases on them.

I guess that should be the question....qould you use a collar with out the safety latch on an indoor cat?

I, personally don't use collars on any of my animals unless I am taking them out of my yard. They are all microchipped and the dangers of collars on unsupervised animals far outweigh the benefits IMO>

    Re: Dog collars on cats?

Use a dog collar on my big cat all the time, and he is an indoor/outdoor cat. Main reason being, I have yet to find a cat collar big enough for him. He has been wearing them for 11 years with no ill effects. Plus, collar and tags are required by law here.

    Re: Dog collars on cats?

A dog collar without the saftey is one thing in a home * less small places a dog can get into, i think* But for cats, they jump up and on everything, i would get them with the safety clasps. I had come home one night to a family cat that had a non adjustable flea collar on, and she had gotten her paw in it, and was literally choking her self because of it. Dont risk it.

( obviously i got the cat out i broke the collar in half, because i could not remove it)

    Re: Dog collars on cats?

A friend of mine keeps dog collars on her indoor/outdoor(primarily indoor) cats 24/7. They have never gotten hung up. I plan to keep one on my sphynx just in case he ever decides to slip out of the door(likely not, they're lazy!). He'll be microchipped regardless though.

    Re: Dog collars on cats?

    Awesome! Thanks guys!

Becky, thanks for mentioning Pet Smart. Where I'm at the only pet store is PetCo (I'm not a fan...at all). They only have two different types of collars, the ones I have that are cheap and flimsy, and the safety clasp ones. I always forget that Pet Smart carries so much more.

I found several variations of what I have right now (with the elastic, not a clip) that look much nicer. I'm going to stop in Pet Smart next time I'm in the city and pick up a couple. They are also much cheaper than they are here!! I'm glad they have more options with the elastic. I'll feel safer knowing the boys can get unstuck if need be, and I can get collars that I like too!

I appreciate the input....no one I know around here that has cats put collars on them, so I didn't get much help from them
