What Ratio?

Karl has a 40 gallon breeder that he wants to raise ASF's for me in. What ratio should I get him? Can I have more than 1 male to multiple females with that large of an enclosure?

Like can you do 2.8 in an enclosure that large without the males fighting?

Robin I do 2.5 and 1.4 with no problems. Males as long as they are raise together should be fine. I have seen some aggression with introducing new males in to a group, then again I have introduced new males with no issues.

Those two males I got from you that were raised together didn't get along once they reached sexual maturity. Had to feed off the one getting beat up. But, they were in a 10 gallon - so less room and less females to share.

1.2 to 1.4 don't keep males together! 1.2 works great for me.

I prefer to keep my groups at 4 females or less. the babies like to get into a big huddle and some end up dead I presume they get smothered. I would also recommend only one male, i tried doing 3.6 and two of the males had major war wounds just above the tail so I fed them off..

I recomend only one male per tank. They may fight, and it is overkill. You will be feeding another mouth and get nothing more in return.

One male will have no problem keeping up with all his lady friends. And I have never (knock on wood) had a male that failed to produce babies.

Number of females is completely up to you. Depends on how many you want to produce. That is a BIG tank. You could easily set up a 1.6 in it... That said, I in my 10 gallon tanks I prefer 1.2 or 1.3

Yup - I know it's a huge tank, too small for domestic rats (and not enough ventilation) and huge for ASF's. I've read on the ASF forum that someone kept large groups (including multiple males) in a larger tank with no problems, which is why I was asking - they didn't state how many they kept.

It is a lot like keeping 2 ball pythons in the same tub. You can do it, but your only asking for trouble. 1 male per tank. Why would one want to have multiple males??? Know what i mean?
