rat mites
I bought 20 weened rats from a pet store that was going out of business. I put them in one of my grow out tanks and after I finished feeding last night I was cleaning all the water bowls and I thought my snakes had gotten mites. So this morning when I went to clean the rats the shavings in that tank was covered in mites and so was the rats. I sprayed them all with flea and tick spray and the washed them off and bleached the tank.I checked all the other rats and mice and they all the rest were good. I guess they could'nt get out of the glass tank to get to the other tanks or into the breeding rack. what else can I do?

Re: rat mites
After using flea/tick spray on the rat, I would not feed them off for 30 days or more. Flea/Tick Poisons don't really wash off, no matter how hard you scrub. I'd let it pass through their system.
I personally use Revolution for kittens or Advantage, one drop behind the shoulder blades does the trick.
I've also heard of others success using Prevent a mite, spaying it on a couple cotton balls, and let the rats nest in them. Preventic collars are also useful, clip an inch or so off of the collar and place it in the rats enclosure.
It wouldn't hurt to double check the snakes to make sure they don't have mites also. While snakes mites don't feed on rats, they've been known to hitch a ride.
Good luck with those pesky mites!

Re: rat mites
After a bad case of rat mites one time I always use:

I've had it in my rat room for 2 years and haven't had a single insect problem.

No problem! A cool thing about the dispenser is that they make fragrances as replacements. So during the winter when they bugs aren't around you can replace it with apple cinnamon or something like that.

We picked up one of those as well (not that exact one), we've never had mites but after one can ran out I only use it for the fragrance.

Re: rat mites
I would be careful how much you handle the rats with mites. Certain types have been known to transfer to humans! Which is EXTREMELY uncomfortable, not to mention the potential for diseases. Make sure if you handle the rats at all even if you think the mites are gone that you check yourself over very carefully.
