Twice a day should be fine
    Breakfast and dinner
    Think of it that way
Leave just enough for it to eat at once
Extra fish food gets messy and stinky very fast

You could even go once every other day if you wanted. Fish don't need to eat every day and in the wild, they certainly don't get to. If he's a pretty big goldfish, you could even knock it down to once every two days. My fish (most of which are tank busters) only get fed 3 times a week. Those big guys can go days without food if they had to. Plus, it cuts way down on your tank maintenance.

    Re: food?

For my Cichlids in a 120 gal tank I go with once every 2-3 days and have for the past 4 years. They do well with this but if I am going away (very rarely) I feed daily the week before if it is going to be a week without food. You didn't state whether it is in a bowl or a tank with mechanical filtration but if it is in a tank without a power filter less is definitely better! Also, flakes are less polluting than pellets or granules but for a large fish the floating pellets are easier to feed because you can feed as many as they will eat in a few minutes with no waste.
