    Waiting for her to Pop!

We've been watching our beige female, Doe for a few days now. She officially looks like she swallowed a tennis ball and has pushed all her bedding to the middle of the tank, leaving two bare areas on either end of the tank. She is favoring corners, only getting up to stretch, grab a quick drink, or move to another corner.

I was wondering what some of the signs are of impending birth? Signs of labor? I was kind of hoping to catch the birth since the only thing I've ever seen give birth was a horse.

Re: Waiting for her to Pop!

Basically what she's doing. Nest building, resting, sometimes resting full out on their backs (the dead rat position), licking her back end a lot. I've seen a lot of them give birth and quite honestly it's seems a very quick, pretty painless, very clean birthing experience compared to a lot of other mammals.

First timers tend to have more issues just sorting out all these things falling out their butt end but an experienced female breeder rat will pop em out, clean em up, slurp down the afterbirth and get those pinks on the teat faster than you could believe. I've watched one of my best females literally with newborns on the nipple nursing while she's still delivering the rest of her litter....pretty darn amazing stuff.

Just don't bug a female delivering. Peek in if you want but don't hang about too much. A nervous first timer can be put off by that. Some female rats could care less, but others don't care for to much human interference while they are busy birthing.

Still nothing from her, but she's sleeping more. She's not drinking or eating much. Maybe it will be tonight or tomorrow. *crosses fingers*

I have a female that has a softball in her...no joke! I thought she was going to pop a week ago by the size she was at, but she is SO big and growing...I feel sorry for her..lol. I expect 20 pinks! Just in time for the new pinkie eating balls this weekend!

Re: Waiting for her to Pop!

Late last night (midnight) I believe I saw the early signs of her going into labor. There were spots of blood on her bedding and she was busy trying to get rid of the traces. She was really active for a bit, then went to sleep. I could see the babies moving around just under the skin while she slept.

I wake up this morning and still no babies. How long is labor usually for rats?

Most likely she will have them while you are gone at work. They can delay their litters for a little if they feel disturbed.

For the longest time, my rats all gave birth in the middle of the afternoon while I was gone.

Well that sucks! I was really hoping to catch her give birth. I work at 4 today so she will probably have them then. I didn't know they could delay their litters.

Lots of rats here and I rarely notice when they are giving birth. I just go to clean and find pinks. I pull prego girls once a week and put them alone or with another expecting mom.

Yep I usually know I've got a new litter of rats by the newborn squeeking going on. I used to watch them birthing occasionally but with so many now it's just not something I do much anymore.
