First ASF Litter
After putting a male in with two females 0n 29 May 08 , on 24 June I now have a litter of 11 healthy young 'uns . Stoked !!!
Other female is due to birth ( probs within 7 - 10 days , guessing )
I have another pair in a Lab cage ( gonna get a new cage, similar to one shown , if all works out )
Canny ( cant ) wait till these dudes get some weight on them , have four REAL fussy ( non - eaters at moment , avaraging fast between six months and ten months ..ALL females ....grrr )
Pics of the young
Caging for them ( trying it out )
Thanks for looking

Re: First ASF Litter
Pat , yes they are ugly , but in a cute way
Derek , they can jump a fair bit , but ( hopefully ) not 17 inches to the top of the wire . I amh gonna mesh it with small hole chicken wire tomorrow , just in case . I'm working on the principle they will not abondon the ''ugly ones '' pmsl
There's three non feeders and a fussy one sniffing in the wings !!

I think I've recored like.. 3 ft.
Never an adult though.. they get too fat. It's always the hoppers that seem to fly. D:
Chicken wire is a good idea, they could probably squeeze out of those sized gaps. :]
Aww, I don't have any peach colored ones.. I just have dark brown and light brown. D:

Re: First ASF Litter
Chicken wire is a minor set back for any rat. Go with the 1/4" hardware cloth. Trust me...

Re: First ASF Litter
I agree with Connie. Any rodent worth it's teeth can chew through chicken wire. Check out your local hardware store for a hardware cloth....1/2" for regular rats, 1/4" for ASF's and mice.

have to ask tho , what is Hardware Cloth ( hey Im a male and Scots !!! )
Just checked the other cage this morning , the pair in there have birthed a litter as well now , that only leaves last female to drop ....very soon methinks .

Re: First ASF Litter
Hey before I had rodents, I'd never heard of the stuff either LOL. I can do better than describe it....here's a picture of the label on our stuff over here.
This is what it looks like installed in a plastic rat tub.
Basically it's just a wire mesh that comes in various types for different applications. The one we use for rodents is a welded stainless wire one. You can also buy this one with rubberized coating but the rats will just chew that right off so why pay extra for that LOL.
Here's a link about hardware cloth...
http://www.twpinc.com/twpinc/control...y_id=TWPCAT_14
It's heavier grade than chicken wire which rodents can easily chew through and it doesn't rust. Over here it comes in 1/2" and 1/4" sizes in most hardware or home stores. 1/2" is good for regular rats, 1/4" for mice and ASF's.
Any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask.
