Anyone use Panacur to deworm their own animals?

Does anyone have experience deworming their baby balls with panacur? My ch08 weighing in at about 90 grams was just diagnosed with pinworms (she is eating well, and seems healthy but a stool sample tested positive). The vet clinic said deworming is optional, and if she seems healthy it is not necessary, but obviously I want to get rid of the parasites before there IS a problem.

I have read Panacur has a low toxicity, and having dewormed puppies and such I wondered if anyone here can give directions on how to deworm her (strength of solution, how to dilute it as necessary for the proper dose, how to administer etc…)

I know the vet will probably charge me $130+ for the vet visit and the follow-up, and if I can just as easily do this myself it would save money as well as save my BP from the stress of being dragged into the vet clinic.

Never had to do it my self but I did have to have one dewormed last year. Now what was used I forget but its something that I would suggest that you get with your vet on. Any time your dealing with Med's its best to let the pros do the figuring dosages and so forth.

If you already had the animal checked out and the stool sample came back positive you should be able to call the vet and let them know that you have decieded to treat her and pick up the meds. This all happened within the last couple days right? I don't see why they need you to come in again if they have already diagnosed the problem.

I would not try to treat the animal with out help from your vet.

That is weird, why didn't they just prescribe you the meds when it came back positive? Just call and ask for the meds... that's really weird.

Re: Anyone use Panacur to deworm their own animals?

I only brought the stool sample in, they have not seen her. I am also less than impressed with this clinic, the specialize in exotics but when they originally called with the results the receptionist said "well we think it might be pinworms, or maybe its not".

I called back and said i wanted to talk to a vet tech or a vet because I had never heard of a sample "maybe showing parasites or maybe not" before. Then the girl checked and said "oh...sorry...yeah it is definitely pinworms but if the animal is healthy you don't have to treat".

I guess unless breeders import a lot of ch babies they probably don't have to do a lot of routine deworming (unlike people dealing with puppies or kittens).

Even though panacur is over the counter, they won't sell it to me without a full vet visit.

I know that people have used panacur on Beardies, but never on balls. If anyone could chime in on this id be glad as well!

Wow... Sonya, I wouldnt stick around with them either. I was lucky I have a very knowledgeable Vet close by... I would look for another one.

I know anapsid has a vet list, and some herp societies do too. I can't think of the other lists name... but it was well kept up to date.

We also have a list here too worth checking out.

    FIND A NEW VET!!!!

Any vet that would tell you that internal parasites don't need to be treated don't deserve your time/money/energy.

Re: Anyone use Panacur to deworm their own animals?

a few years back i bought a bunch of farmed babies and my vet walked me thru how to dose and administer the meds (panacur and flagyl) she even made me a dosing chart and gave me the supplies after the intianal visit.

did your vet give you any ideas where the pinworms may have come from ? have fun!
