Re: Blue Rats yes blue
I've had nothing but heartbreak with Petsmart blue hoodeds. I had one that I spent a ton of money on at the vet only to lose her after our fight to keep her alive.
Another one stroked out on me, and another died during labor.
I would recommend that you NOT breed her and just keep her as a pet.
I've not had the same problem with blue selfs.
She's a cutie pie, it's just a shame that the blue hoodeds seem to be so inbred to keep up with their popularity.

She is pretty! I got mine as a surprise in one of my litters.
I'm so afraid to bring in a new rat. I'm scared that it might make everyone sick. Am I being paranoid?

Not in the least. Having a small but thriving colony myself, I worry constantly about even coming home from stores that have rats. I dont go into the rat room after I've been to the store, and the strictest quarantine is observed if I do bring a new rat home.
It would be a disaster if my colony got sick. Complete and utter disaster.

Well, if you ever want one just let me know. I don't know what the shipping deal is with live rodents but I could probably figure it out. I've got blue hooded and plain ol blues all the time.
I don't have any problems with any of them, they're all tame and healthy.
I may not be very smart, but what if I am?

Thanks for the offer, Wes! Maybe it's the supplier in GA that has the problems. I know another member here in Savannah also had bad experiences with the blue hoodeds from her Petsmart and also swore them off. I can't believe it's a random occurance for us, only isolated in the blue hoodeds.
Blue selfs, no problems at all, blue hoodeds have been trainwrecks. The first one developed an innner ear infection and went down from there to spinning, etc - despite repeated attempts by my vet to treat her. He actually cried when she didn't make it - said he hated to see a good rat not make it.
