I have no started looking for some asfs to start breeding but i did hear they are illegal in CA? Is that true? If it is then its probably going to be hard to find them. If its not true and anyone breeds these and has some to sell to me in Southern CA(LA Area) please message me or if you know where i can get some.
They are illegal in California.

Re: I want to try to breed ASF's
ASF are also very prolific breeders. You would have to either feed off the male after he breeds the female, or buy him a male partner to live out his days with. You'd get anywhere from 10-20 rats in one litter. That's 10-20 weeks of food. You'd also have to have at least 2 tanks big enough for the males and females from the litter, and if you've ever sexed a rat before, ASF's can be tough to sex at the weanling age. (4 weeks) If you get it wrong, you'd be over run in a few short weeks with ASF's, and that is expensive and stinky.
For one snake, it's just cheaper and easier to buy either bulk FT or continue to buy live once a week.

California has a lot of animals that are illegal due to ecological reasons (Ferrets, Hedgehogs, Gerbils, ASF, Sugar Gliders, Monkeys...etc)
The thought is that if they ever get released into the wild, the temperatures here are similar to the habitats of their origins, and that they will become prolific, as the Mongoose is in Hawaii.

I've heard from a few different people that it's harder to sex at the weaning age, not impossible.
It's best to separate any rats when they are weaned to prevent pregnancies. Which I believe for ASF's is at 4 weeks. Any later and the mother may again become pregnant by her son, or any females from the same litter may become pregnant by their brothers.
Just saying.
