(AP) A Long Island animal shelter is a temporary home for a 1-foot-long snake that a mother found coiled on her 7-month-old daughter's leg as the baby slept in a crib.
Cari Abatemarco of upstate Troy says she was visiting family in Brentwood last week when her baby's cries woke her one night. She tells Newsday that she found a snake wrapped around her daughter's leg.
Abatemarco says she lifted her daughter and the snake fell off. A relative removed the snake from the crib and placed it in a bucket until animal control officers arrived.
The reptile has been identified as a California king, a non-venomous snake that's not indigenous to the region.
Abatemarco says her family doesn't keep snakes as pets. Officials say they don't know where the snake came from.

I have to ask - why did you include the smoking gun?
It is nice to see a story where the snake survives and no one over reacts and claims it was trying to eat their car or was a 60 foot cobra python for a change though.

i have a feeling the snake was crawling on the baby not coiled around it. a baby is WAY to big for a cali king.

Re: front of cbs news web page
So the Cali King was supoosedly 'coiled' around the babies leg but when they lifted the baby it 'fell off'.

Re: front of cbs news web page
This town is actually 15 mintutes away from me and this was all over the local news. It looked like a very healthy kingsnake to be paving his own way in the wilds of long island.
My guess is that someone either let it loose or it escaped and ended up with the baby shortly afterwords.
None the less the news took the "(dramatic voice and music)Imagine checking on your baby and finding a...dun dun dun" story angle on it.
