Lateralis breeding

Ive been keeping and breeding lateralis and dubia roaches since last october, but just set up a new, cleaner tub for a colony of lateralis without substrate. Do i need to have a susbstate for the females to lay the egg casings in or can the simply lay them on newspaper and can they hatch this way ?

They do not need any substrate and it is SO much easier to clean if you do not use any or just use paper. I have bred both lateralis and dubia and used vertically stacked eggcrates in the tubs--the females layed egg cases directly on those or on the bare ground and they hatched out fine.

i used to have lateralis and didn't use substrate either.... i just don't want to deal with the egg casings anymore when i clean the tubs.
where is a good place to get some cheap dubia? they are a lot more expensive than lateralis... at least where i've seen them online. thanks for any help.

I originally made a cork bark tile setup with some long bolts and washers in order to make a series of freestanding thin tile sheets sandwiched together with small spaces in between. I did this for my dubia, but I imagine it would work just as well for lateralis.

I still have that setup in there, but I use a lot of egg cartons now.
