    Hides made from sculpey clay?

In my frustration with Temptation burrowing in his substrate, I've decided to go get some of those Scott Shop Towels mentioned in this thread and make him some little hides, including one with a water-dish top, out of sculpey clay.

My main question is, will it be safe for him? It's bake-to-dry clay, and I can either glaze it or not glaze it... though I probably will since the one will hold water.

If they turn out well I might just offer to make some for people.

I can't answer if they are safe or not, but I would like to see some pics.

    Ask and ye shall receive!

After observing my 3rd-grade-art-class mad skillz, my husband told me that he was actually in sculpture classes in school, and asked if he could do it. I grudgingly obliged.

Here they are, about to go into the oven. I used the terra-cotta color.

And here we are the next morning, baked and dry and ready to go, once I get home from work and can set Temptation's tub up anew.

I was going to carve his name into them and everything, but I figure I can sell them or give them to someone when he outgrows them. The water dish on top of the one on the right is a little small, possibly not useful quite yet. I'd want to glaze it first. Maybe I'll have my husband do that while I'm at work to give it time to dry.

Ooo...you're planting ideas in my head, woman. Does it cure in a regular oven or do you have to have a kiln?

Very cool. The only thing that I know you have to be careful about is making sure the glaze you used is food safe. So perhaps using it as a water dish is not a good idea until you know for sure.

The type of clay shouldnt make a difference, it's mostly about the glaze.

The Sculpey brand cures in a regular oven. It is a little bit soft right after it comes out, but it hardens completely as it cools.

And I need to check that the glaze will be food safe... I ended up with craft glaze, so I'll look for something else later. Thanks for reminding me!

The one on the left looks like a turtle shell! The only think i would have done different would be to make it where you can fit a water bowl into the clay.

Come here little guy. You're awfully cute and fluffy but unfortunately for you, you're made of meat

Oooh, my mother has a kiln at her house!! This is giving me good ideas. I don't see anypictures because I'm at work, but ideas are flowing.

Yeah, it's gotta be food safe glaze, nothing with lead. yikes.

That's awesome!! I have a clay pot that i dug a hole in to use as a hide but I couldnt find a second one the same size so I scraped that idea....This is so creative and a fun 'day-off' experiment I would like to try.
