What % do you put back?

A question for the breeders, both large and small, how do you determine what % of the money you get from selling a snake or snakes goes back into the "business." Say do you put 50% back into more snakes, feeders, husbandry and pay yourself the other 50%. Just curious to see what other people are doing.

I have been putting 60 percent back into the business each year and paying myself with 40 percent. That might change next year though. Everybody probably does it differently.

If/When I become a breeder whether big or small, ANY money I make will be split 50/50 with my fiance. My 50% will go back into my herps and the other half goes to my fiance since my fiance helps with feeding, cleaning, handling, ect. I don't want any profit from my snakes, just enough to get more snakes, racks, ect.

110% goes Back in to the snakes.. So what I make nothing on them, But they make me happy!!

This is definitely an "it depends" sort of question. Not only will it vary from individual to individual, but you will probably find you adjust it as you go.

Starting out, you are likely to not keep anything for yourself. In fact, you are likely to need to continue putting more into it. Later on, you may be able to keep larger and larger percentages of the profits. Then you may hit a point where you decide you want to expand your business and need to put most of your money back into it for a while.

This would be true for almost any sort of hobby or business, not just BPs.

I'll have to side with John on this one. We have been putting over 100% back in for the last 3 years. And probably for at least the next 3 as well.

WHEN our girls are large enough to breed, any monies made will go into getting more snakes, racks, feeders, exc. Otherwise where else would it go? Your paying for that stuff already

well it all depends is this your hobby or business are you well knowen out in the herp world where you have exceding profits. do you provide your self with the items you need food, cageing,snakes. if and when i breed my boas i will use most of the money to get more cages and more snakes

Rent 25%
Utilities 4%
Bedding & rodent food 4%
new racks 17%
new snakes 33%
Shipping (included) 3%
Shipping supplies 1%
Misc Supplies 1%
Tax accountant 1%
Paid back 11%


and paid back from our own money invested early on....
