    carpet pythons

well, im just too addicted. a month ago i bought my first ball python and now i want more. Umm i was thinking about carpet pytons cuz they're cool, and i heard they are good beginners, so here a a few ?'s:

What are the best types (i know there's jungle and iriana jira or something like that what are the others)?
    how long do they get?
    what do they eat?
    are they nice or mean?
how big of an enclosure do they need (dimensions) ?
    any great breeders?
anything else i need to know?
    Thanks.

    Re: carpet pythons

There are basically three types of affordable carpets in the US. They are jungles, Irian Jayas, and coastals.

    The Irian Jayas grow to about 5 1/2 - 6 ft., jungles 7 1/2 - 8 ft., and coastals can grow to 9 - 10 ft. plus.
They are all a bit nippy as young ones but grow out of this stage with time, size, and handling.
They eat rodents; basically mice and rats.
They all like some arboreal space in an enclosure but it is not necessary. I house my IJ's in 41 qt. Sterlites. The coastal females work well in a cage with a floor space of 3ft. x 2ft. or 4ft. x 2ft. is better.
If you are interested in some IJ's or coastals, hit me up. If you are interested in some jungles, hit up my friend Ben at http://www.australianaddiction.com/ .

A few of my animals can be seen in this thread: http://www.ball-pythons.net/forums/s...2&page=2&pp=10

    Re: carpet pythons

i looked at your thread, and the irian jayas are amazing. i will probably end up with those guys as a first carpet. I will build a cage, since i can customize it myself anyway i want. Oh and i saw other morphs like jaguar or something, but i think i just want a normal to start out with...What's the average cost for a 1-3 month old IJ carpet?

    Thanks.

    Re: carpet pythons

you could get into one for $75 at a herp show, or you can get a really nice one with great bloodlines for $200 on up... jags are usually $1000+
they're bulletproof and very rewarding, good luck!

Thats good to know that if they get shot they will not die, I would hate to spend money on a snake that could be killed by a firearm.

Btw, it is possible for irian's to hit 8 feet, althought I would expect most to stay smaller. My female's mother is an 8 footer.

You might want to check out www.acreptiles.com Anthony has a great article about the care of carpet pythons.

Yep, MPENN would be a great person to talk to for normal IJs. He has produced some killer IJ babies over the last few years.
