    new roommate (sort of)

This little guy decided to set up shop last night on my front porch. I am petrified (sp) of spiders (and this one is at least five in. long) but I also think they are very graceful and beautiful, and this one took my breath away so I had to share. Enjoy!

What kinda spider is that? It does look kinda scary eh!
Friendship is like peeing on yourself: everyone can see it, but only you get the warm feeling that it brings.

Why is it called 'after dark' when it really is 'after light'?

Definitly a Garden Spider, I use to see them all the time when I lived in Georgia.... They spin probably the strongest web I've ever walked into.

Writting spider. I don't know if that's the proper name but that's all I've ever heard them called. You really can't see in the pic but she spun a very big and very big zig zag patterened web. IMO pics never can do an animal justice!

When I was growing up in Florida we called them Banana spiders. I couldn't begin to count how many times I got a face full of one of these dudes while running through the groves at night.....

    Re: new roommate (sort of)

I am glad that someone else around here calls them writing spiders!! LOL That's what I have always called them, I must have heard it somewhere around here in VA. I think that they are one of the prettiest spiders around here, and they LOVE to make their webs in my parents front bushes and more recently over top of my parents doorbell button. I was joking my dad saying that that must be how they keep away the solicitors and unwanted guests!! LOL

Their webs are very pretty too, how they have the zig zag design in the middle. And their webs can be HUGE!!

    Re: new roommate (sort of)

I haven't gone to check him out, but I've seen one sitting in the middle of his web under my carport the past few days. I usually have at least one around every year. Last year it was right outside my back door. I don't deal well with spiders inside my house, but these guys can "hang around" all they want!
