    well that sucks

So I was at home depot today for my melamine for my rack and I needed 3 16" x 8' pieces cut out of a 4' x 8' sheet. No problem for that big saw they have. So the guy cuts the first 2 right and for the last one he put the blade on the wrong side of the line so the piece ended up being 1/8" different then the other ones . And of course we didn't discover this until we got home! So now I'm debating on whether or not to turn my rack into an 8 tub system instead of 10...Do you think I would get my money back if I brought that piece back? Has this ever happened to any one else?

Go back and tell them he cut it wrong. They will replace the piece for free and you shouldn't have to worry about it. Just take your original wood and show them the difference. Be sure to take your receipt if you bought it there.

I had pieces cut for my 8-shelf rack and the guy didn't listen to me. The pieces ended up being 25" across instead of 24", which didn't work out at all(didn't leave me with any wood leftover to work with). They cut the pieces I needed for free and gave me the remainder of the sheet of melamine($34 sheet).

Just my experience with the Home Depot folk

Well, it IS Texas and everything has to be bigger here.. Such as the prices..

It costs an arm and a leg(and sometimes the firstborn) to build a rack down here(or over here to you Floridians).

    Re: well that sucks

Well I just learned an important lesson from this thread. Bring my cut list and my tape with me. Measure it all before we leave the store. Thanks folks!

another option is to bring your cut list to a cabinet shop, this has several advantages.

most quality cabinet shops will have a computer operated cutting machine that gives EXACT cuts with no chipping or waste.

the biggest advantage IMO is you get a much higher quality melamine than from home centers.i have built several melamine racks with this method and am pleased with the results.ave fun !

    Re: well that sucks

My Home Depot won't cut melamine, so all you guys are lucky. They say it releases toxic fumes or some bs like that. But yeah, I would bring all of the pieces back (so you can show that you bought a whole sheet) and explain the problem.

And as I'm sure you already know, be sure to measure before you leave the store, it'll save you a huge headache!
