Question found this guy today... id?

we found him in the middle of the road, basking on the blacktop. he looks healthy... absolutely gorgeous! we weren't sure what it is or whether or not it's venomous, so obviously, we weren't going to pick it up. and there were no sticks around. so we had to leave it in the road. he didn't like us looking at him. he took a defensive stance and opened his mouth to show fangs. (not real big)

here's a head shot... blurry but it'll have to do...

any ideas? we thought maybe a ratsnake? or king? we don't really know what either of them look like...

Looks like a Western Fox Snake ("Pine") (Elaphe vulpina)

They mimick copperheads so predators will leave them alone...they are non-venomous

One error I made...it is an Eastern Fox not a Western one.

    "Elaphe gloydi"

That is why I said Western at first ...but then I came across an exact image of the one they saw and that site said the range could go as far as South Dakota.
