    Ontogenesis (ETB)

Emeralds and GTPs share a similar and spectacular metamorphisis from neonate colors to adult colors. This is one of my favorite parts of keeping emeralds and why I prefer getting neonates as opposed to adults or sub-adults. Emeralds, although it isn't uncommon for northerns to be born green, are for the most part born a red/orange color, with basins being a burnt orange. Between 3-4 months most begin to change and finish around 9-10 months. I understand that GTPs tend to start much later and take longer.

Here are some examples of the change in emeralds.

I have never heard of one not changing. I have had a slow starter not begin to change for over a year. I'll see about posting a series for an amazon basin emerald. Northerns tend to have pattern when born, kind of what you see is what you get. Basins only show a little of what they are going to have pattern wise and as they change color, pattern begins to show.
